Blog#9: October 1, 2020

After doing research I believe that my magazine's house style will be tailored for a younger audience. This being because so far the only solid idea I have for my magazine is a fashion one, specifically one about the different clothing look aesthetics throughout different eras. So, I will use colloquialism that the younger generations will understand while continuing to use a formal writing style. I would make sure that my grammar is proper, and use conventions that will make my magazine look appealing.

Blog#8: September 30, 2020

Today my teacher assigned me to do research on house style specifically how it works in media. So, to begin house style refers to the specific usage and editing of conventions followed by writers and editors to ensure stylistic consistency in a particular publication or series of publications. Such as newspapers, magazines, journals, websites, and books. (ThoughtCo.com). These rules apply to the way words are spelled, graphic design, formatting, and more.

House styles are used in media because it helps to provide uniformity in style and formatting of all published material within the organization, which makes it more memorable.  Therefore, House styles will be influenced by its audience because its style will try to appeal to them. For example, teen magazines will notoriously use slang and informal language.  Therefore, house styles are used with many publishing agencies and organizations, which have been developed to suit the type of material they publish.         Today I decided to continue my research on different conventions of magazines because there is such a wide variety of them that I'm still unaware of. I used a different site this time for my research which is Slideshare.net.

  • Some conventions that are apparent in magazines include:
  • The heading is in the signature font of the magazine and in a bold sans serif font to clearly title what it is for, to show the features of the magazine Heading
  • The title is in a bold serif font that attracts the reader’s attention as well as having colored circles around it.

  • Subheadings are in characteristic font and short and simple which makes easy reading and provides information as to what is in the magazine. Subheadings are in a bolder font and are short and catchy.
  • A tagline that is short, simple, and catchy, easy for the reader to pick out and it shows what is in the magazine by featuring the name of the cover model as well.

For todays blog I learned the concept of conventions and how they are used in media, specifically how they are used in magazines.

  • First I learned what conventions are in the first place which is  Media conventions are rules or agreed practices that relate to particular genres or styles of media productions. Media conventions are the ways media codes are used and combined to form individual or generic media styles. (Helveticamediuma.com)
  • Some coventions typically used in magazeines include: Mastheat which is the font used is characteristic to the magazine which makes it instantly recognisable and noticeable to the readers along with the stand-out red colour and bold letters.
  •  Cover model: Usually cover models are celebrities and popular models to attract more attention.
  •  Double Page Spread For the magazines of my genre that I have researched I found common conventions in them all. The left hand side page consists of one large image with the right hand side featuring the article.

Upon further research I have learned more about the different types of content that is included in magazeines based on their genres. Below are some of the most popular genres that magezines have.

  •  The most common category of magazines is the general interest publication. These types of magazines are written for a general audience of everyday people. They typically cover a broad range of topics, like food, fashion, entertainment, or home and gardening.

  •  The other big category of magazines is the special interest collection, with topics that are specific to a particular audience. If you're a fan of fishing, cooking, computers, or photography, there is likely a special interest magazine out there that you would enjoy.

  •  A third category of magazines are professional in nature, meaning that they contain content for very niche groups of people, such as doctors, bankers, or marketers.
  • Many consumer magazines are part of the general interest category of publications. These are magazines covering the news, celebrity and entertainment, business, family, fashion, and men's or women's topics, sometimes all within one issue.

I got my research from Article from Study.com.

Before creating my own magezine I must familarize myself with the history and the craft of magazenies in general.

  •  Firstly, the definetion of a magazeine would be "... a publication with a paper cover which is issued regularly, usually every week or every month, and which contains articles, stories, photographs, and advertisements." (Collins Dictionary).
  •  The term “magazine” appeared in the year 1731 with the occurrence of the Gentleman’s Magazine. The success of the magazine was great, but the costs of every issue were even higher. Printing cost was high, and the number of printed copies could not be greater than one hundred thousand, because it was technically impossible to squeeze a larger amount of paper through the machine.
  •  Over time the popularity of magazeines has risen and fallen, however, there will still be printed magazines, no matter how popular tablet editions are. Yes, the numbers will drop but they will never die.
  •  Magazines shape our lives, telling us what to wear, what to eat, what to think about ourselves and the world around us. Although this is the age of the Internet, we continue to enjoy magazines, admire their pages, editorials, and headlines.

Finally, I get to tell you guys more about me which is my favorite subject. I  enjouy reading manga and books and in terms of genres, I lean towards romance, fiction, and mystery. I also watch anime and dramas, I tend to binge-watch them when my life lacks pizzazz. I have a big family consisting of my six sisters and three dogs, they are a huge priority in my life even if I deny it. And a big hobby in my life would be hanging out with my friends I love spending quality time with them.

I not only choose this class because I wanted another AICE credit for to get my Cambridge Diploma but also to learn how to edit properly and blog. As for my future affter graduation I plan on attending college for my Bachelors of Science in Nursing. I am sure that my future career will be in the medical field specifically nursing because I already have expereince as a CNA and loved the enviornment and the resbponsibilites I had.

I also have the goal of moving out of my house once I know where I'm going to college to gain some independce from my big family. I currently live in humid sunny Florida but I long to live upstate somewhere chilly like Phildelphia which, by the way is where I was born.

Blog #2 September 17, 2020

As this is only my second blog so I've decided to reflect on my syllabus for this course along with what I skills I expect to improve and learn throughout this course.

Affter reviwing the tasks I need to complete I am already feeling nervous about how I will learn how to properly edit and put together a magazeine from home without adobe. I'm also feeling nervous about studying media platforms, such as this blog because I have never done it before. However, I am feeling excitied about creating content for my topic since I plann on writing about something I am intreseed such as asthetics or music. I am also lookimg forward to sharing my final product with my friends and family.

In terms of skills I can say that I have experience in editing photos which I know that I will need in order to make a visually appealing two-page spread. Although, I do feel nervous about how I will learn how to properly edit and put together a magazeine from home without adobe. A skill that I hope to build on would also be creating content for a specific audience, which I have done through essays before but this will defiently prove as a challenge for me. However, I am also excited to see how my magazeine will end up like, hopefully as good as I imagine. The image down below represents how I feel so far, which is embracing this course.

Blog#1: September 9, 2020

Hello there, my name is Miya, and this is my introductory blog to record and report my progress in creating a two-spread magazine for AS Media Studies Class. As for the content I plan on using this blog as evidence of the creative process of my work and as a creative critical reflection. To give you a little background knowledge I am a senior now in high school and I am taking this class to earn my Cambridge AICE Diploma and out of pure interest on improving my media producing skills and knowledge. I plan on creating a magazine and although right now I'm not quite sure of the genre will be I am interested in creating one about food or fashion.
The steps I will take include:
  • Researching magazines, by analyzing their themes, audiences, topics, and layouts.
  • Taking notes based on what I find and learn, and plan the production of my magazine; making sure to report my progress here.
  • Communicating with my group members to get their opinions and feedback on my blog and magazine.
  • Creating a layout for my final magazine, which will contain a front cover and a double-spread. Which will be all my original content.
  • A reflection of the blogging process and the final product of my magazine.
Well from here on out my progress will be recorded, thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy it.
